Vindication!
You know the feature in iTunes that allows you to see other people's shared music? Well, usually I keep it turned off, but I guess I must have toggled it on by mistake.
So here I am sitting in the Bodleian (again, still, as always, yes, I know), and I'm poking through some random person's music collection, turning up my nose at and congratulating him on his musical tastes as I scroll down. Playing the odd thing that I know I like, and the odd thing I've never heard. It's a bit like poking through somebody's closet when he isn't looking - you feel slightly shady, but there's still a visceral thrill of seeing parts of some random person, whom - as he remains safely anonymous - you can dissect at will.
But then.
Then, I scrolled all the way down to the bottom. And what did I see there? "Indiana Jones Main Theme." I have to tell you, cognoscenti, there is something secretly heroic about turning up the Indiana Jones theme loud loud loud through your headphones in the middle of the Bodleian. It makes you feel, well, a bit like Indiana Jones. In that incredibly cool dashing sexy way. Yes! I think! Being a historian is AWESOME! Just listen to this fantastic score! Of course I am exactly like Indiana Jones!!
(sadly, it is only 2:17 minutes long, this is obviously not the full version - so to think this for any prolonged bit, you have to play it multiple times; no problem - we are on go-round number four here...)
Ahah! Yes! Right! Exactly like Indiana Jones! Look at these books! Look! I am discovering things right now! Probably in a very dangerous and cool way! Yes! Although I may look like a standard academic, there is always the chance that I will jump out a side window and run off to some corner of the world where adventure will ensue!
You persist in your boring studies, surrounding weedy scholar-types. I am like Indiana Jones! Yes! Sniffle and wool-sweater your way through a Tuesday, look up occasionally like turtles stretching up out of a mucky little pond. I have a horn section! A full and very brassy horn section! Yes! Do you have a horn section? You do not!!
(here are to my favorite part again - time six)
Yes! I am a historian! So there!!!!!!
(okay, just once more)

Just like me! And possibly, I can be like....

...this, too. Ha! Yes! I can! Because I have a horn section!!!
(oh, who am I kidding? I am so listening to this for the rest of the afternoon!)
(Update: the lady next to me told me I had to turn down the volume [NB in my earbud headphones, no less]; apparently even she was feeling too cool and would have been unable to continue working for all of her desire to, perhaps, vault over some desks and tip over some furniture - I can totally understand that)
